Earthgivers Charity Corner
There are more than a few unsung heroes in our community. That’s why we’re so passionate about finding and supporting smaller, local, often-struggling non-profits, as well as special causes that help individuals and families. Here’s what we’ve been doing lately:

In May and June, Earthgivers sold popcorn, raising $2,567.76 for the Ramirez family to honor Stephen Ramirez who suddenly passed away in January, leaving behind his wife and four daughters. In September, we hosted a 5 B’s BBQ fundraiser for Brynley Shipley, who was diagnosed with leukemia in 2021. We sold 234 meals and took in many generous donations. So far in 2023, we have collected more than $8,000 in charitable donations.
Hope for the holidays
But we’re certainly not finished with 2023 yet! For the holidays, we’ll be participating in the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots Program by accepting toys to bring the joy of Christmas and send a message of hope to disadvantaged children. Anyone interested in helping can drop off a new, unwrapped gift or book at any of our branches. We’ll also be participating in the Salvation Army’s Angel Tree Program, supporting local families by fulfilling their holiday wish lists with toys and clothing.
Many thanks to all the volunteers and community supporters who fuel our efforts!

According to the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), the two most prevalent holiday scams are non-delivery and non-payment crimes related to online buying and selling. In a non-delivery scam, a buyer pays for goods or services they find online, but the items are never delivered. For those who are trying to make extra money for the holidays by selling online, the non-payment scam involves goods or services being shipped to a buyer, but the seller never receives a payment. Variants of the non-delivery scam are when items are misrepresented in online auctions or through social media ads, and what the buyer paid for is nothing like what they were expecting to receive.
Avoid holiday scams when making online purchases by only buying from legitimate merchants that you know and trust. Don’t click on suspicious links or attachments to emails, and never provide personal information or credit card numbers on unsecured e-commerce web pages. If you are buying from a merchant for the first time, make sure their URL has “https” at the beginning of the address and always confirm their legitimacy by doing searches for them on the Internet to see if others have had issues with them in the past. Do not rely solely on reviews posted on their websites, as these can easily be faked.
Also, when making payments, do not use prepaid gift cards. It is best to use a credit card that provides buyer protection in the event of fraud.
Have a very safe and festive holiday season.
Why credit union rates are better

Beginning in the latter half of 2022 and continuing through 2023, consumers have seen nothing but rate increases across all loan types, including credit cards. And while no financial institution has been immune to this trend, credit unions—including Earthmover—are dedicated to providing our members with the lowest rates around.
How can we do this? Unlike banks, credit unions are not-for-profit, which means that any profits earned go into lowering loan rates, increasing earning yields and lowering or eliminating fees. Credit union members are also owners of the credit union, and each member has an equal vote at annual meetings. For-profit banks, on the other hand, have outside investors that expect to make money on their shares of stock—which is why banks typically have higher rates and lots of fees on their accounts.
The bottom line for us is your bottom line. We do everything we can to help you keep more of your hard-earned money where it belongs—with you. There is strength in numbers, so we appreciate your being a member, and we invite you to tell your friends and relatives about our benefits so they can enjoy them, too.
With every move, a step forward!
